The Royals Show Band is a community based band, administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. Members pay annual fees towards the expenses of the band, but band expenses far exceed what fees can cover. Choreography, music instruction, uniforms, musical instruments, musical scores, transportation, and office management are expensive.
During the 1995-96 season, the Red Deer Royals Show Band gave over 60 performances to over 576,000 people! We give Red Deer tremendous exposure! We gave 32 performances in Red Deer, and 28 out of town, in 10 different towns and cities. Highlights included the Festival of Champions Parade and field shows right here in Red Deer, the Calgary Stampede Parade, the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Junior Curling Championships here in Red Deer, the Canadian Short Track Speedskating championships in Red Deer, and the Silver Buckle Rodeo openings.
The Royals also participated in the World Show Band Championships at the Calgary Stampede, performed at the Olympic Oval, and played to thousands on Canada Day in Banff and Canmore.
Last summer we performed in many Alberta communities. The band continued to grow last year, and we finished the year with a band of 81. Our band members come from Red Deer, Red Deer County, Bashaw, Lacombe, Olds, Rocky Mountain House, Delburne, Sylvan Lake, Stettler, and Didsbury. The continued growth of the Royals was and still is exciting. A larger band is more spectacular and has a better sound, and draws more attention to Red Deer. It also places an increasing administrative and financial burden on the organization:
The Royals require more marching uniforms (love that red and white!) (@$800 ea.), and more concert uniforms (@$300 ea.) More uniforms are wearing out.
The RCMP and Rebels mascots we took on tour to Australia were hugely popular! But we need our own Royals mascot! Mascot outfits cost at least $4000!
Music in Motion -- an experience our young students never forget. The trouble is, some kids don't get the chance unless people like you can help. Some talented, keen young people cannot join us to play trumpet or clarinet. They cannot afford the tuition, and it hurts us to turn them back into the streets. Your donation to our Piper Creek Optimists Bursary Fund could help a young student to turn his life into something special - through Music in Motion! Think of what your donation would mean to such a child!
The need grows for more instruments, and equipment for all parts of the band.
As you can see, operating an international calibre marching show band is a costly endeavor. Uniforms, instruments, music instruction and choreography are all expensive.
Thanks to community spirit and generosity last year, the band was able to grow and mature, but the Royals will not survive without donations from you and other Royals family members again this year.
I hope that you will become a member of the Royals family. Why not climb on the bandwagon this year? We hope that we can count on you!
We have a number of ways to recognize your participation! Please see below to see what we can do for you! We will advertise all of our donors in our newsletter. This year, the Royals recognized our major supporters by putting their names for all to see on the sides of our attractive mobile equipment trailer. What a way to advertise! Your name could travel with the Royals wherever we go! Do you have an idea of how you would like to be recognized for your participation? Let me know!!
